Our journey began in 2001 with a small outdoor shop named “The Gear Exchange” that mainly focused on consignment in a cramped 600 sqft store. Fast forward to 2008, the business changed hands and began introducing new products alongside used ones. Shortly after, the business moved to a bigger space located at 420b 9th Ave and quickly became the hub of Golden’s outdoor community.
In 2013, the Gagnon family bought the store and introduced bike retail and service, year-round rentals, and a passion for biking clinics, training sessions, and community events. By 2015, the business had moved to its current location at 501 9th Ave, under the name “Higher Ground Sports”. Due to the declining demand for quality used gear with online platforms taking over, the used gear market rapidly changed, and we decided to use that area of the store to add a coffee bar with smoothies and ice cream.
Over the years, we have endeavoured to support a healthy work-life balance for our customers. But in more recent years, we have also focused personally on self-care, spiritual attunement, and connecting with nature as we move through the seasons and sports of the year. Sharing this ethos with our customers has become a fundamental aspect of our business.
Our small beginnings birthed an appreciation for every customer’s contribution to the life of our business. We continue to strive to support community initiatives, provide quality customer service, employ knowledgeable and qualified technicians, and offer a range of quality products to all who walk in our door.
So whatever your equipment needs, or repair/service you are looking for, our friendly and welcoming team is here to help ignite and nurture your passion. That’s what we’ve been doing since we opened in 2001. It’s what we did when we bought in 2013, and it’s what we’ll continue to do for generations to come at our new location on the traditional, unceded territory of the Ktunaxa and Secwepemc peoples which is also home to the Metis Nation in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
